함께 걷는 길, 성인이 되는 꿈

Walking Together Toward Sainthood

문득 생각이 나서 올립니다.

우리 신앙의 목표는 결국 성인성녀가 되는 것이 아닐까요? 세례를 받는 순간, 우리는 이미 그 부르심 안에 들어선 것이니까요. 그런데 돌아보면 참 많은 신자들이 그 목표를 마음 한켠에 품으면서도, 어느 순간부터 그저 미사에 참례하고 묵주기도 한 단씩 바치는 것으로 신앙생활을 마무리하게 되는 것 같습니다. 성인이 되고 싶은 마음은 있는데, 어떻게 해야 할지 모르고, 또 혼자라는 느낌이 들어서 어느 순간 그 열망이 조용히 식어버리는 것이지요.

This is just a thought that came to me unexpectedly, and I share it humbly.

What is the ultimate goal of our faith? Is it not to become saints? From the moment we receive Baptism, we are already called into that vocation. And yet, looking around, it seems that so many of the faithful carry that aspiration quietly in their hearts, while gradually settling into a rhythm of simply attending Mass and praying a decade of the Rosary here and there. The desire to become a saint is there, but they do not quite know how, and the loneliness of walking that path alone causes that longing to slowly, quietly fade away.

생각해보면 수도자들이나 신부님들은 양성과 교육, 영성지도와 공동체 생활을 통해 끊임없이 성덕을 향해 나아갈 수 있는 환경이 제도적으로 마련되어 있습니다. 그런데 평신도들은 어떻습니까? 세상 한가운데서 살아가면서도 그 길을 거의 혼자 걸어가야 합니다. 레지오 마리애도 있고, 빈첸시오도 있고, 꾸르실료도 있지만, 그 단체들은 저마다의 고유한 목적이 있어서 '성인이 되는 것'을 오롯이 중심에 놓고 함께 걷는 공동체라고 하기엔 조금 "다른 결" 이 있습니다.

When you think about it, religious and priests have a whole environment built around their growth in holiness — formation, education, spiritual direction, community life. All of it is structurally provided for them. But what about the laity? They live in the middle of the world, and yet they must walk that path almost entirely on their own. The Legion of Mary is there, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul is there, Cursillo is there — but each of these communities has its own particular charism and purpose, and it would be fair to say that none of them are centered solely and explicitly around the shared pursuit of becoming saints.

그래서 문득 이런 생각이 들었습니다. 성인성녀가 되고자 하는 평신도들이 함께 모여, 같이 배우고, 같이 기도하고, 같이 순례도 다니고, 서로 격려하며 걸어가는 작은 공동체가 있다면 어떨까 하고요. 매달 한 번 모여 성인들의 삶을 함께 읽고 나누고, 매주 소그룹으로 모여 기도하고, 가끔은 영성지도 신부님께 함께 지도를 받고, 카카오톡으로라도 일상의 신앙을 서로 나누는, 그런 소박하지만 진지한 모임 말입니다. 성소가 있는 분이 계시다면 수도원 체험도 함께 연결해 드리고, 전국의 뜻 맞는 신자들이 네트워크를 이루어 서로 힘이 되어주는 그런 공동체요.

And so this thought came to me. What if there were a small community where laypeople who genuinely desire to become saints could gather together — to learn together, pray together, go on pilgrimage together, and encourage one another along the way? A modest but earnest group that meets once a month to read and reflect on the lives of the saints, gathers in small groups weekly for prayer, occasionally receives spiritual direction together from a priest, and stays connected through everyday faith sharing. A community that helps members discern a calling to religious life or the priesthood, and that gradually forms a nationwide network of like-minded faithful who become a source of strength for one another.

거창할 필요는 없습니다. 그저 같은 목표를 품은 사람들이 함께 걷는 것, 그것만으로도 혼자일 때와는 전혀 다른 힘이 생기는 법이니까요. 교회 역사 안에서도 위대한 성인들은 대부분 혼자가 아니었습니다. 그들 곁에는 늘 함께 걷는 동반자들이 있었습니다.   평신도가 살아나야 교회가 완성됩니다. 이 작은 생각이 하느님의 뜻 안에서 언젠가 작은 씨앗 하나가 될 수 있기를 바라며 조심스럽게 나눕니다.

It need not be grand or elaborate. Simply walking together toward the same goal — that alone creates a kind of strength that is simply not possible when walking alone. Throughout the history of the Church, the great saints were rarely solitary figures. There were always companions walking beside them.

The Church is made whole when the laity comes alive. I share this small thought gently and with hope, praying that it may one day become a tiny seed within God's loving will.
